Obituary of Guðmundur Mark Magnason

December 13, 1945 - Montreal, Quebec
November 16, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Guðmundur “Mark” Magnason of Calgary, AB, passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at the age of 77 years.

Mark was born in Montreal, Quebec Canada on December 13, 1945 where his parents worked and studied and soon after returned home with his parents to Reykjavik, Iceland where he grew up.

Mark married Sigrùn Hulda Magnason (nee Garðarsdóttir) in 1968. He studied to become a chartered accountant in Iceland and then moved to Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1977 with Sigrùn and their two sons. The move was intended to be a two-year adventure abroad, but after falling in love with the city, the local Icelandic community and the Rocky Mountains, they made Calgary their forever home.

Mark worked at Touche Ross when he first moved to Canada and then spent most of his career at Greyhound Lines of Canada and later with KUDU Industries as an accountant.

Mark was a lover of music with varied tastes that ranged from the Beatles to Country, Hip Hop and Rock. Mark loved to take long road trips with his camera and take pictures of the Rockies and beautiful landscapes in Western Canada and Montana.

Mark will be remembered for being a very social person who loved connections and long conversations. He was incredibly proud of his grandson Bjorn Alden Magnason. He was also proud of his Icelandic heritage, and loved visiting his birthplace, Montreal.

Mark is survived by his two sons, Magni Magnason and Garðar Magnason, one daughter-in-law, Kimberly Magnason, and one grandson Björn Magnason, all of Calgary Alberta.

Mark is also survived by his brother, Hjörtur Magnason of Raufarhöfn, Iceland, and sister Kristín Magnadóttir of Reykjavk, Iceland as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mark was predeceased by his mother Ása Hjartardóttir (2008), and his father Magni Guðmundsson (2000), both of Reykjavík Iceland, as well as his former spouse Sigrùn Magnason (2023) of Calgary, Alberta.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
