Obituary of Dong Jin Park

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Dong Jin Park, a remarkable individual and patriarch. Growing up in Korea during the Japanese occupation and facing the challenges of the Korean War helped shape Dong Jin’s persevering nature.

He was very goal-oriented, so academics became one of his priorities. He attended Seoul National University, the University of London, and the University of Alberta. After completing his studies, Dong Jin was joined in Canada by his wife, Hae Jin, and his four sons, David, Charles, Phillip, and James, who immigrated in 1970. Dong Jin was an educator in Korea and in the northern Alberta communities of Fort Vermilion and Chateh. He retired in 1983, but he filled the next forty years with family time, caring for Hae Jin, volunteering with the Edmonton Korean Association, listening to his eclectic music collection, indulging in his great hobby of computers, and, most recently, making a science of growing orchids.

Dong Jin was predeceased by his wife Hae Jin, to whom he was a devoted husband for seventy years, and his oldest, dearly loved son David. Dong Jin was very proud of his Korean heritage; his legacy will be carried forward by his three sons, ten grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street N, Calgary, AB T2E 2V6) on Friday, December 1, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen's Park Cemetery.
