It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maureen “Mickie” (nee McLean) Korek, who left this world on November 19, 2023. She was 86 years old and lived a life filled with love, compassion, and unforgettable moments.

 

Born in Calgary, AB, on July 7, 1937, Mickie was a beloved mother, wife, family member, friend, and colleague whose immeasurable impact reached far and wide. She touched the lives of those around her with her kindness, warmth, and unwavering support. Mickie Korek will be remembered for her wisdom and generosity, which brightened the darkest of days.

 

In her personal life, Mickie was a devoted wife. She cherished the moments spent with her husband, Irvin “Irv”, her children Gregg “Scooter” Korek, and Scott Korek. She spent her years as a caring mother, building a home filled with love and laughter. Mickie was a lifelong churchgoer of the parish of the Holy Nativity Anglican Church in Calgary, AB. She filled her days with an astounding amount of travel, crafts, and spending time with her granddaughter, Athen. Mickie was a supporter of everything Calgary, AB; with numerous visits to Heritage Park, the Calgary Zoo, and countless hours spent supporting the Calgary Stampeders and Flames. She encouraged and supported the Calgary arts community and was fond of theatre, art galleries, and exhibits which she regularly attended. She was a strong supporter of the Calgary Stampede where she worked in the 1960s in the Rodeo Office. Later, she was, a regular yearly patron of the world-famous event. Mickie consecutively participated in the Stampede for over 75 years.

 

Professionally, Mickie excelled in her career as a Social Worker at Manchester Enterprises. She was known for her dedication, hard work, and ability to inspire her colleagues.

 

During this difficult time, let us find solace in remembering the joy Mickie Korek brought into our lives, and the positive impact she had on the world.  

 

Mickie Korek is survived by her two sons, Gregg, and Scott; and granddaughter, Athen. Mickie is predeceased by her husband, Irv, sister Lorraine Foesier, and brother, Ron Mclean. Her family will continue to carry her legacy forward with love and fond memories.

 

May she rest in eternal peace, and may her memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to us all.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Mickie Korek’s life will be held at the BMO Centre (Arabian Room, Stampede Park, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. till 4:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Arabian Room. Friends and family are invited to join together to honor and remember the remarkable person she was. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Mickie’s family here.
