Obituary of Verda Delores Dixon (nee Twoyoungmen)

April 2, 1951 – Banff, Alberta

November 21, 2023 – Cochrane, Alberta

Verda Dixon has gone home to the Spirit World in the early morning hour on Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at the age of 72 years, in Cochrane at the Bethany Long Term Care Centre where she had resided for the last few years of her life.

Verda was born in Banff, AB, on April 2, 1951. Verda was a strong Nakodabi woman, knowledgeable in traditional teachings with medicine and Ceremonies throughout her life. Verda had various employments in Banff, Canmore, and Mini Thni Nakoda Nation.

Verda was a survivor of the Residential School. Throughout her life, family gatherings were her favourite, celebrating and enjoying the Spirit of Seasonal Holidays.

Verda leaves to mourn her Daughter Julena (Rod) Dixon, Grandson Duane (Chantelle) Cecil, Granddaughters Daphne (Eagle) Helkett, Lynai (Larz) Dixon, Courtney (Evan) Dixon, Keysha (Neil) Dixon, and Darla (Jerry) Bearspaw, and Grandson Isaiah Bearspaw.

She is also survived by her Brother Larry (Geraldine), Culturally adopted brother Myron Baptiste and Sisters Anita, Wanda (Mark), Claudia (Ali) and Pam (Sonny); Uncle Randy (Jackie) Twoyoungmen, Aunts Helen TYM, Maryjane TYM, Sheila Labelle as well as 26 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles, from the Twoyoungmen, Labelle, Kootenay, Powderface, Fox, Simeon, Mark, Dixon, Hunter, Salter, Giroux, and Daniels families; from Tsuu T’ina, Maskwacis, and relatives from Rockyboy, Montana. The family would also like to recognize a special companion to Verda, Terry “Eli” Labelle.

Verda was predeceased by her loving Husband Raymond Dixon Sr., son Raymond Dixon Jr., Daughter Samantha “Tweet” Dixon, adopted Daughter Teresa TJ TYM, Verda’s  Parents Audrey TYM and Jack Labelle; Brother Jackie TYM, infant Brother Lenny TYM, Sisters Jeanette TYM and Linda TYM; Nephews Brennon and Bradley TYM; Maternal TYM Aunts Ruth, Alma, Georgie, Sally, Mary, and Linda; Maternal TYM Uncles Hugh, Hanson, Ivan, Charlie and Fred; Paternal Labelle Aunts Clara, Nancy, and Yvonne; Paternal Labelle Uncles Gordon, George, Lawrence, Pete, and Johnny; Maternal Grandfather Hanson (Georgie) TYM, and Paternal Grandmother Elsie (Scotty Sr.) Labelle.

Verda’s family would like to thank the staff of the Bethany Care Centre in Cochrane for the wonderful care they took of Verda. They would also like to acknowledge the Stoney Health Service Home Care for all of their care and support of Verda.

Wake Services will be held at the late Verda’s former residence in Mini Thni, Alberta, on Saturday, November 25, 2023. Funeral Services will be held at the Mini Thni Gym on Monday, November 27, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Chiniki Cemetery (Mini Thni, AB).  Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed here.
