Obituary of Robert Keith Haney

April 13, 1944 - Winnipeg, Manitoba

November 24, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Robert "Bob" Haney beloved husband of Maureen Haney (nee Rutherford) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023, at the age of 79 years.

Bob was born in Winnipeg, MB to Francis (Frank) and Berna Haney. This was where Berna grew up and where Frank was posted during WWII. After the war they lived in Toronto and Etobicoke where Bob grew up. He played High School Football and participated in competitive swimming in the Great Lakes. A Toronto Telegram paper route of over 100 customers was the first of at least 30 jobs in his lifetime. Bob worked for the Coca-Cola Company and Levi Auto Parts in Toronto.

Bob moved to Calgary in 1965 and married Maureen in 1969. His most memorable jobs in Calgary were working for the Calgary YMCA as aquatic director for several years and, while attending the U of C, working for Calgary Parks and Recreation. Bob had a long career teaching school for the CBE, teaching at Alex Munro Elementary, Sir John A. MacDonald Jr. High, and Henry Wise Wood High School. He was a football coach and coached the Wise Wood swim team. After retiring in 2002, he pursued his lifelong passion for buying and selling collectibles at the Heritage Market and Alyth Collectibles.

Bob loved talking to people and finding out about their lives. He made it a point to remember names and something special about each person. It was wonderful to watch people’s faces light up as he used their names and shared his knowledge about them with another person. Bob thrived with social interactions, and he cultivated acquaintances and friendships like some cultivate a garden – and his harvest was inspiring. He was a loyal and steadfast friend to many, and we, his family, would feel like we knew the people, too, from the stories he would tell. He had a trail of friends wherever he went – he spent many evenings at the swimming pool as well as at collectable conventions and shows – where he emphasized the importance of his connections by bringing little tokens to show that he remembered likes, dislikes and interests.

Bob is survived by Maureen, his wife of 54 years, and their three children, Erin Hansen (Lonnie), James Haney (Cathy) and Keith Haney. Bob was extremely proud of his children and five grandchildren, Joshua and Nathan Haney, Sarah-Jane, Jacob and Kaitlynn Hansen. He is also survived by his sister Joan MacKenzie of Mesa, AZ; nephew Kevin Mackenzie; nieces, Nicole MacKenzie and Jessica (Nate) Castile and children; and his 98-year-old Aunt Freida Haney.  He was also close to niece Susanne Goosney (and her three children) and nephew Michael (Susan) Johnson, children of Maureen’s sister Anne (Richard) Johnson. He is also survived by brother-in-law Tom (Donna) Rutherford and children; as well as cousins and many cherished friends.

Bob was predeceased by his parents Berna (1962) and Frank (1985) and his cousin Harvey Bolton, as well as by his wife’s parents, Thomas and Susan Rutherford, for whom he was like a second son.
