Obituary of Joyce Theresa Johnson

October 10, 1935 - Halifax, Nova Scotia

November 27, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Joyce Johnson, of Calgary, AB, on Monday, November 27, 2023, at the age of 88 years.

Joyce was born in Halifax, NS, to George and Annie Sadler on October 10, 1935, and grew up in beautiful Portuguese Cove, NS. Joyce married Wayne, had four children, and enjoyed living in Halifax, Truro, NS and Fredericton, NB. After her children moved to Alberta, she joined them, moving to Calgary in 1990.

Joyce will be most remembered for her love of children. She adored her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other children who crossed her path. She will also be remembered for her love of gardening, especially in the spring and summer, and the time she spent tending her flowers. She was well known in her neighbourhood for the colour and beauty she added to her garden. She loved her kitties, particularly an adopted family of four strays she found in her garden shed, and the family puppies. She enjoyed travelling, especially to Hawaii and home to the Maritimes, and she was an avid fan of the Price is Right, the Y&R and Wayne Gretzky.

Joyce enjoyed her career, which commenced at Maritime Accessories in Halifax, continued at the University of New Brunswick’s Harriet Irving Library in Fredericton, and concluded with Catholic Family Service in Calgary.

Joyce is survived by her children, Christene (Richard), Linda, Russell (Debbie), and Lee Ann (Purdy); grandchildren, Monte, Nicholas and Jill; great-grandchildren, Coen and Kale; as well as her nephews, nieces, and friends.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated and loving staff at Wentworth Manor.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Chapel of the Bells, 2720 Centre Street N, Calgary, AB) on Friday, December 15, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
