Obituary of Ruth Sutherland

Ruth was born in Calgary on January 10,1932 and passed away on December 3, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Ruth is survived by her daughters Susan (Dan) Molineaux and Janice (John) Manes, grandchildren; Joshua (Rebeca) Manes, Erin (Eric) Allard, and Scott Molineaux, great grandchildren; Anderson Manes, Brody Allard, and Jack Allard and by many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband George, infant son Craig Harry, parents Harry and Eleanor Anderson, brother Allan, and nephew Martin Anderson.

Ruth, a third generation Albertan was raised on a farm in Shepard. She attended Shepard and King Edward schools, ultimately graduating from Western Canada High School in 1950. Ruth went on to work at Remington Rand (Univac) where she met George, the love of her life. She and George purchased a home in Lakeview where she resided until her passing. It was there she and George raised their daughters. Ruth supported all their endeavours including school projects, Girl Guides, ballet, and field hockey.

Nothing was more important to Ruth than her family. She loved family road trips, celebrations, and get togethers. Ruth had boundless time and patience for her grandchildren, and they enjoyed many activities together, including bird watching, playing board games, and baking together to name only a few.

Ruth spent countless hours volunteering in the community including UCW, Girl Guides, the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary as well as the Alberta Family Histories Society where she continued to be active up to her passing. Over the past 20 years Ruth spent hundreds of hours amassing volumes of records researching her family's history.

Ruth had a passion for gardening and passers-by always marvelled at her yard. She spent many hours planning, digging, and nurturing her flowers.

A Celebration of Life will be held at The Glencoe Club (636 29 Ave SW, Calgary, AB) on Monday, December 18, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Ruth’s family here.
