Obituary of Doreen Elsie Hook (nee Anderson)

April 20, 1930 - December 10, 2023

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma and Great-Great-Grandma Doreen at the age of 93 years.

Doreen was born on April 20, 1930 in Regina, SK and passed away December 10, 2023 in Calgary’s Prominence Way Retirement Home in the Dementia wing, where she had spent her last remaining years wondering why she got to spend so much time in the “lovely hotel where everyone was so kind to her”.

Doreen lived her early life in Lipton, SK, where she attended Hayward School, and then Lipton School, where she attained high marks, especially for her penmanship. School is also where she met Gordon, who would tease her in order to gain her attention. After finishing school, she joined the staff at SaskTel in Regina, married Gordon, had two sons and then, once the boys had left home, she went on to university. She became employed with the Department of Parks and Renewable Resources, from which she retired in the 1990’s. They then up and moved to Calgary to be closer to their youngest son, Don.

Doreen is survived by her sons, Terrence (Terry) of Pilot Butte, SK and Donald (Marta) of Calgary, AB; grandsons, Jason and Charles; great-grandsons, Tyler, David, James and Thomas; and although she never got to meet them personally, her great-great-grandsons, Brody, Trenton, Kaycee and Dallas, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Doreen was predeceased by parents, Sidney and Freda Anderson, brother Jack Anderson, grandson Jeffrey Hook and her beloved husband of 63 years, Gordon William Hook.

Doreen will always be remembered for her generosity, love of laughter, her stories and the many, many hugs she gave to everyone.

All family and friends are welcome to join us for a Celebration of Doreen’s life at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. Reception, to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
