Obituary of Larry Hodgins

November 5, 1930 - Killarney, Manitoba

December 12, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

 

Richard (Larry) Hodgins, beloved husband of Evelyn Jeanette (Jan) Hodgins, peacefully passed away, December 12, 2023, after succumbing to his long-time battle with type 3 diabetes.

 

Larry was born on November 5, 1930, in Killarney, Manitoba, where he spent most of his young life on the family farm and his grandparents farm. Along with his parents and brother, he moved to Penticton, BC, due to his father’s lingering health problems from sleeping sickness. In 1950, his family moved to Calgary, Alberta. Shortly after he met his wife Jeanette (whom he lovingly nicknamed Jan). In 1951 Larry and Jan were married in the First Baptist Church in Calgary. Between 1952 to 1961 they had five children.

 

Larry was predeceased by his youngest son Richard (Rick) Hodgins (2009), grandson Shayne Brandhagen (2013); mother Grace Lillian Dove Hodgins (nee Dagg) (1976), father William Harold Hodgins (1976), brother John (Jack) Hodgins (1949), brother Stanley Hodgins (1995), brother William Hodgins (1925), and sister Baby Girl Hodgins (unnamed) (1917).

 

Larry will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 72 years, Evelyn Jeanette (Jan) Hodgins (nee Macdonald), daughter Toni Hodgins of Calgary AB., son Jack Hodgins of Calgary, AB; daughter in-law Donna, granddaughter Melissa, grandson Chad, daughter Fae Brandhagen, of Arlington, Texas; granddaughter Katrina Ray of Arlington, Texas; grand-son in-law Tim Ray, great granddaughter Lydia, grandson Clinton Brandhagen and his partner Ann, NY, great granddaughter Lilly Brandhagen, USA, daughter Jan Wilson of Nanton, Alberta; granddaughter Jacqueline Wilson, great granddaughter Haley, great-great grandson Theodore, granddaughter Andrea Wison, granddaughter Connie Wilson, great granddaughter Maya, granddaughter Diamante (Diamond) Hodgins, Calgary AB., grandson Richard (Richy) Hodgins, Calgary, AB and the many wonderful close friends.

 

The family would like to extend special thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Rocky View Hospital in wards 73 and 56, also a very special thank you to the nurses who were with Larry during his final hours.

 

A Memorial Service will be held at the Westview Baptist Church (1313 Ranchlands Ways NW, Calgary Alberta) on Saturday, January 6th, at 2PM for the Celebration of Larry Hodgins Life. There will also be a luncheon held following the service.
