It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our precious dad, Roy Clement Doore Sr., on December 14, 2023 at Siksika Nation, AB, at the age of 81 years. Roy was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, and friend to many.
Roy’s Blackfoot name is “Payoo’tapoh’koomi” which means echo thunder. This name was given to him by his grandparents. He was the eldest of his three surviving siblings in the Doore family. The siblings are proud to celebrate the long life they had together as children and into their senior years.
Roy attended the Crowfoot Indian Residential School in the sixties where he completed his high school diploma, he played basketball and hockey. He also played for the Blackfoot Braves Hockey Club. Roy later graduated from Olds College in 1964 where he received a Diploma in Agriculture, he was the first Indigenous student to graduate from this institution. In 1966 he went on to complete his Social Leadership Diploma from St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia. He worked for 60-plus years for the Siksika Nation government. In Dad’s earlier years, he was instrumental in the development of the Siksika Vacation Resort Ltd., where he later became the President and General Manager (1975); he was also involved in the establishment of the Old Sun Community College (1973). In later years he was hired as the President and CEO for the Siksika Resource Development Limited (1997).
In addition, Roy was a founding Director and Vice-President of the Alberta Indian Agricultural Development Corporation; President of Old Sun Community College; founding Director of the Blackfoot Radio and Kainai News; Vice-President of the Alberta Native Communication Society; founding member and President of the Indian Agri-Business Corporation (now Indian Business Corporation). He also served as the founding President of the Siksika Economic Development Corporation (1987).
In his last years, he participated as a board and committee member of the following: Siksika Resource Development Limited, Old Sun Community College, Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park, Siksika Elders, Land Use Committee, and Indian Business Corporation.
