Obituary of John Warren MacRae

February 24, 1944 - Lethbridge, Alberta
December 20, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of John MacRae on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at the age of 79 years. John led a fulfilling and active life and was skiing at Lake Louise as recently as October.

John was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on February 24, 1944 and was a long time Calgarian with a few short periods of time spent on the B.C. coast. After attending the University of Calgary, he joined the investment industry where he enjoyed a forty plus year career and established many strong and lasting friendships. He loved the city of Calgary and was an enthusiastic supporter of his beloved Calgary Stampeders.

John was an exceptional athlete excelling at many sports, but his passion was skiing. The discipline and commitment he brought to his athletic endeavours were evident in his pursuit of difficult black diamond runs, challenging moguls, and speed; John loved it all and had a goal each ski season to improve his performance over the year before. The ski hills that brought John the greatest joy were Lake Louise, Sun Valley, and Lake Tahoe.

John is survived by his dear wife Sharleen; they were together almost forty years and devoted to one another. They enjoyed many years of travel often vacationing at their favourite places, Sun Valley, Hawaii, Lake Tahoe and Vancouver. John was predeceased by his parents, Roberta and Warren MacRae. In addition to his wife Sharleen, John is survived by his brother Donald (Stephanie), sister Bonnie, nephew Mac (Paula), as well as many other relatives.

As we bid farewell to John MacRae, we celebrate a life filled with love, a wonderful sense of humour, and the joy of many lifelong friendships forged along the way. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him; he will be deeply missed.

The family wishes to extend sincere appreciation for the excellent care and compassion provided to John by the staff at the South Health Campus Hospital, and by home care case manager Claire.

Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on John’s obituary here.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, friends and family may wish to make a donation to a cancer foundation of their choice.

In living memory of John MacRae, a tree will be planted in the Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area by McInnis & Holloway Funeral Homes.
