Obituary of Ross Leslie Porter
May 20, 1958 - Montreal, Quebec
April 27, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
Ross Porter passed away on April 27, 2024, at the Skypointe Hospice in Calgary, AB, at the age of 65. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Theresa “Terry” Dillon. Ross was born and raised in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (NDG), an area of Montreal, QC, where he met and married Terry. They rented a duplex on Fielding where their son Austin was born, and not long after that, they bought their first house in Hudson, QC, where their daughter Katelyn was born. In 1996, the young family relocated to Airdrie, AB, where he spent the rest of his days.
Ross was an accomplished Journeyman Pipefitter at Propak in Airdrie and was highly respected in his field. In 2000, he was awarded first place in the Alberta apprenticeship program. While he took his job very seriously, he was known for always trying to get a laugh out of his coworkers.
He was an avid reader, enjoyed playing darts and billiards, and building Lego sets. He also enjoyed camping with Terry in their Surfside trailer. His happy place was at their property near Sundre, AB, where he loved to spend his summers puttering around, watching the wildlife, and feeding the birds. His hands were his biggest tools; he was fascinated with everything mechanical and could repair just about anything - although he was modest about how talented he was. He really loved designing and building things. He was especially pleased with the tiny cabin and matching outhouse that he built on their property with the help of his friends and family.
Ross was known for his positive and upbeat nature, even in the face of multiple cancer diagnoses. He was determined to fight and never lost his cheerful spirit.
He was a loving, devoted father to his son Austin (Deidre) and his daughter Katelyn (Matthew). He was extremely proud of both of his children. He will be deeply missed by his sister Lynn (John), brother Gary (Diana), mother Marguerite Porter (née Vary), and his extended family and many friends. Ross is predeceased by his father, James “Jimmy” Porter.
Our family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who have supported us during this difficult time. Ross will always be remembered for his friendly smile, sense of humour, and determination to live life to the fullest.
A visitation, followed by a Celebration of Life will be held for family, friends, and former colleagues at McInnis & Holloway (300 Towerlane Drive, Airdrie, AB) on Friday, May 10, 2024. The visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m., and the Celebration of Life will commence promptly at 4:00 p.m.
