Obituary of Loreen Dyck

Loreen ‘Laura’ Dyck (nee Enns) of Edmonton, AB, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at the age of 92 years. She was born in Bassano, AB on June 21, 1931. Laura was one of eight children in the Enns family. She attended school in Rosemary, AB, and Grade twelve in Rosthern Junior College in Saskatchewan. Laura married Peter Dyck on October 27, 1951. Soon after their marriage they moved to Calgary and adopted three children.
Laura was a member of First Mennonite Church in Calgary and spent many years working for Mennonite Central Committee helping refugees establish new lives in Canada. She was very involved in the establishment of Calgary Mennonite Centre for Newcomers. Her passion was working with refugees. Many of these remained good friends all her life. Mauricio Morenos became like a son to them when he came as a teenager from South America. Laura was very active in her church for many years. She was very talented in music and served as director of a children's choir for many years. She loved singing in adult choirs for many years.
Laura is survived by her children, Patricia (Marty) Rempel of Vancouver and James Dyck of BC; grandchildren, Karleen Rempel of Calgary, Jeremy Rempel of New York, and Dwayne Contant of Calgary; great-granddaughter Dehlia, and sister, Lola (Herman) Neufeld, and sister-in-law Kristel (Eric). Many friends and relatives will miss her generosity and love.
Laura was predeceased by her husband Peter, daughter Laurie Contant, grandson Keith Contant, parents, David, and Katherine; and siblings, Fred (Nettie), David (Marian), Jacob (Betty), Gerald (Ann), Eric (Kritstel) and Theodore (Mary).
A Graveside Service will be held at Mountain View Memorial Gardens (1515 100 St SE, Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at 9:30 a.m. Memorial Service to follow at First Mennonite Church (2600 Richmond Road SW, Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, January 3, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Laura’s family here.
