Obituary of Carol Wilnae Hodinott

June 27, 1945 – Weyburn, Saskatchewan

December 22, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Carol Hodinott (nee Gustafson) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2023, at the age of 78 years.

Carol was born in Weyburn, SK, on June 27, 1945. She spent the majority of her youth in various small towns across Saskatchewan with her mother and two younger siblings. Upon graduation from high school, she moved to Ontario to pursue a degree in nursing. While there, she met and married her husband, Duncan, in September of 1977. Shortly thereafter, the couple made their way back out west to settle in Calgary, AB, where they welcomed and raised their daughter, Lucy.

Duncan, Carol, and Lucy spent much of their free time camping across Southern Alberta, eventually securing a permanent site in Sundre, AB, where many hours were passed around the firepit with friends and family. Carol could often be found reading a book or doing “her puzzles” on the deck, with a cup of tea in hand.

Carol was a dedicated RN, who spent many years working in extended and palliative care. Her caring and calm demeanor was welcome in this field, and she was recognized on multiple occasions throughout her lengthy career.

Carol had a passion for volunteering, be it at the schools Lucy attended, at various camps for children that were terminally ill or underprivileged, or for the Girl Guides of Canada. Guiding was where Carol found her true calling, devoting over 20 years in one capacity or another. Even once “retired” from the organization, she frequently assisted with a camp or other event, that required a seasoned leader. These years brought many memories and lasting friendships, as well as the opportunity to travel throughout Canada, and to the United States.

Carol is survived by her daughter Lucy McLean (Bob) of Airdrie AB, sister Rose Leibel of Regina SK, brother Bill Gustafson (Maureen) of Regina SK, grandchildren, Jake, Austin, Averie, and Jordyn, as well as her beloved nieces and nephew.

Carol was predeceased by her husband Duncan, mother Verbel Gustafson, and father Berger “Bill” Gustafson. 

A remembrance in honor of Carol will be held later in the spring of 2024, where we look forward to hearing the stories and anecdotes of those who knew her.
