Obituary of Marin Mihoc

January 21, 1937 – Lastovo, Croatia

December 31, 2023 – Calgary, Alberta

Marin Mihoc passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 31, 2023, at the Foothills Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Marin was predeceased by his parents Marin and Kata Mihoc; as well as his sister Maria (Peter), and brother Kristo (Giordana).

He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Pasqualina (Pat), his daughters Cathy (Steve), Maria (John), and son Marino (Johanna); grandchildren Ryan (Kirsten), Amanda (Ryan), Lisa (Anthony), Dana (Maverick), Samantha (Rachel), Ryan (Sasha); great-grandchildren June, Everly, Marin, Tucker, Cooper, Brynn, Jaden; sister Lucy (Tony), and brother Frank, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other loving extended family.

Born in Lastovo, Croatia, on January 21, 1937, Marin immigrated to Canada in 1957. He married his soulmate in 1960, living in Calgary until building the farm outside of Madden. Most recently, they resided in Airdrie. While a proud Canadian, he never lost his ties to Lastovo, and still considered it to be home. Making and sharing wine with family and friends was a love that lasted his entire life. He was happiest when sharing a meal and wine with those he cherished.

He enjoyed volunteering at St. Mary’s Cathedral and the Lions Club to help support his community. Early on, many weeks and weekends were spent fishing and camping with his family and friends. Particularly with his brothers-in-law, Tony and Cosmo, and their families. The early days also saw many a night dancing away at the Italian Club.

In his later years, farming and fishing in Mexico brought him great joy. Making sure to be able to eat what he caught, Marin would drive a deep freeze full of fish home to Canada each trip.

Family was his priority; it was his pride and honour to help his family immigrate and settle in Canada. Watching his grandchildren come of age and start their own families brought immense joy and love.

Many thanks to the staff at FMC, particularly those on Unit 64 of the McCaig Tower. Their compassion and professionalism made a very difficult time easier. The staff were incredibly accommodating as the family took over the hospital room and family waiting area during the extended vigil. In his final days, Marin and the family appreciated the wonderful love and support that came from family and friends.

Marin is sorely missed, and will never be forgotten, living larger than life, fiercely loving, affectionately referred to as “grumpy grandpa”, he leaves a legacy to be proud of.
