Obituary of Edward J.J. Martyn

July 8, 1932 - December 29, 2023

The family of Edward Martyn is saddened to announce his passing at the age of 91 years.

Ed was born in the village of Beatty, Saskatchewan, and raised in Prince Albert, along with his three brothers and two sisters. In his early years, Ed worked for CNR and did a stint on the DEW Line. When he met and married Lucille (nee Ayotte), they started their family and moved to St. Albert, Alberta.

Ed was vibrant and charming, he loved people and was great with numbers. Encouraged to pursue a career in Insurance, Ed started at Great West Life, he worked hard and learned fast, successfully working his way up the ranks, and was transferred to Calgary in 1962. He went on to work for Maritime Life and Rocky Mountain Life, becoming a member of the Executive Club, earning a famed ‘purple Cougar’ and was a member of the Million Dollar Round Table.

Ed's positive attitude and quick wit attributed to the many long lasting personal and professional relationships he established. He loved his career in insurance and estate planning, and he loved Calgary, the Stampede, the mountains, road trips, planes, trains, family reunions, day trips and fishing expeditions.

It was his love for Lu and their eight children that was the source of his greatest pride and joy, always making time for family adventures and travel. Ed is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Lucille, and children William (Michael), Dwayne (Brenda), Bradley, Dwight (Evelyn), Wesley, Lisa, Matthew (Maha), and his five grandchildren.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church (5340 – 4th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Friday, January 12, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow.
