Obituary of Peter John Scott Boyle

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Peter John Scott Boyle. He passed away suddenly at home on Tuesday, December 30, 2023 in Calgary, AB.

Peter was born in Glasgow, Scotland on June 3, 1949. He immigrated to Saskatoon, Canada with his parents and sister on New Year's Eve, 1965. He finished high school and attended the University of Saskatchewan (B.Sc. Geology). After university, he worked in mineral exploration in northern B.C. He lived in Vancouver at the time, allowing for plenty of time on the Whistler “UIC Ski Team”, where he met his future wife. Esme and Peter moved to Calgary and married in 1976. Peter continued working “in the bush” until Alistair and Sandra were born. Peter realized he needed to be closer to home and transitioned to the oil and gas sector, where he spent most of his career, before retiring and working as a consulting geologist.

A confirmed putter and tinker, Peter was constantly dismantling and rebuilding things, both big and small. Perhaps the most ambitious of these involved the entire house, from the foundations up. He loved his long weekends and summers at the cabin (Christina Lake). Peter was a storyteller, an armchair expert on all things, and loved nothing more than solving the problems of the world with his buddies. He insisted he was an introvert, yet would talk the ear off of every stranger in a highway traffic jam. He had a passion for poking around hardware stores, pawnshops, and the far reaches of the internet to find the perfect item for the house or one of his grandkids. Peter would drop everything for family. With his grandkids, he played chess, explored the city, read so many books, had epic ball fights, created, built, and experimented.

Peter is survived by his wife, Esme (née Rothman); children, Alistair and Sandra, their spouses, Amy (née Watson) and Trevor Anderson, respectively; and four grandchildren, Edison and Hazel Boyle, Hayes and Emmett Anderson. He was predeceased by his parents, Ray and Grace Boyle (née Dickinson), and sister Dr. Carol Boyle.
