Obituary of Stephen Howard McLaren

January 4, 1955 – Ottawa, Ontario

December 31, 2023 - Calgary, Alberta

Steve, a revered figure in the aviation industry, departed from this world on December 31, 2023, leaving behind a legacy that will forever soar through the skies. Born on January 4, 1955, he dedicated his life to the skies, ultimately becoming a seasoned pilot with an illustrious 40-year career accumulating 18,000 hours total time.

Having earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1977, Steve embarked on a journey that would take him to the four corners of the globe. He navigated the complex airspace of life with grace, embodying qualities of leadership and perseverance that extended beyond the cockpit.

Beside him throughout this incredible journey was his wife, best friend, and number one fan Yvonne, who shared in the triumphs and challenges of a life spent above the clouds. Their union was a testament to enduring love and support that lasted 41 years.  Together, they created a warm and welcoming home for their two children Kristen, and Justin and now their families. He will be forever missed by Kristen, Jesse, Emma, Nevi, Owen and Willa Loates as well as Justin, Valery, Amelia, and Keith McLaren. Lovingly remembered as NoNo.

In the face of adversity, Steve displayed unparalleled resilience. He survived a plane crash, and several health issues, a testament to his unwavering determination and courage; Steve always bounced back. This experience only fueled his passion for flying transforming him into an advocate for improving the aviation landscape with new ideas. In his words “a mind expanded by a new idea never regains its original shape”.

Throughout his four-decade long career, Steve left an indelible mark on the aviation industry. His contributions were not only measured in miles flown, but also in the lives he touched and the countless individuals he inspired. His dedication to excellence and commitment to mentorship became guiding beacons for aspiring aviators.

Kristen and Justin carry the torch of their father's legacy, and while Justin inherited his father’s passion for aviation, they both share Steve’s values of perseverance, integrity, and a love for adventure.

Steve’s departure leaves a void in the many hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit lives on through the countless stories of his colourful adventures, and the lives he touched. The aviation industry mourns the loss of a trailblazer and mentor. His family and friends remember him as a loving husband, father, and a man who truly soared to new heights.

In Steve’s words……. Sim U Later!
