Obituary of Joan Frances Matthews

Joan Matthews of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2024 at the age of 65 years.

Joan was born in Winnipeg, MB on February 23, 1958. She married Jeff Matthews on June 18, 1983. Joan was an adventurer and spent most of her adult life overseas. Joan and Jeff moved to Aman Jordan in 1984 where they lived for a year. After Michelle and Joel were born, Joan and Jeff packed the kids up and moved to Queensland, Australia in 1987. They decided to move to Indonesia in 1989 where they lived for close to 30 years. While living in Bali, Joan operated several very successful businesses in the hospitality industry, both spas and restaurants. Joan returned to Calgary in 2015 and was an avid pickle ball player and active in all areas of life, including spending most of her time with her family.
 
Joan was recently described by one of her friends as the “definition of a beautiful human”. She was bubbly, kind, extremely thoughtful and so much fun to be around. She was one of those very rare people that made everyone around her feel special and important. She was the rock of our family and will be missed immeasurably.
 
A Private Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2024. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed with Joan’s family here.
