Pritpal Boparai

Obituary of Pritpal Kaur Boparai

May 25, 1935 – Kheri Khurd, Punjab

January 4, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Pritpal Kaur Boparai (nee Chahal), the beloved wife of the late Sardar Jhanda Singh Boparai of Calgary, passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at the age of 88 years.

Pritpal was born in Kheri Khurd, Punjab India on May 25, 1935.

Prital accomplished much throughout her life spanning ten decades and two continents. She spent the first half of her life in Punjab, India where she married her beloved husband Sardar Jhanda Singh Boparai in 1955 and raised their six daughters. Together they immigrated to Calgary, AB in 1989 due to political unrest. One thing that remained consistent was her love and care for her family. She was a strong matriarch.

In her younger years, she was quite attached to her mom, as she lost her father at a young age. She was the youngest child and the only one in the family who decided not to go to school so she could stay at home and help her family with housework. Once married, she joined her husband in the various cities where he was posted for work. However, once her daughters began to come of age, she decided to root down in Patiala to raise and educate them with stability. She took immense pride in keeping a well-managed, pristine, and loving household. Pritpal was also known as a strict parent, and she never hesitated to defend her daughters. Her favourite pastime was her daily excursion with friends to Dukhnvaran (Sikh Temple) to pray which was a 6 km round trip!

When in Calgary, like her husband she had one motto “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”, and so adjusted quickly to her new life. She was curious and strong-willed, never saying no to trying something new like food or travel. Her daily walks continued and became a way to explore her new neighbourhood in Calgary. She enjoyed listening to religious stories and hymns, Gurdaas Mann’s music, and her late husband’s political commentary. She was also very proud of how her six daughters and grandkids built successful lives across Canada and India, visiting them often throughout the years.

Pritpal is survived by her six daughters and four sons-in-law, Ravinder Gill (Mohali, India), Amanvir M. Harjit Atwal (Patiala, India), Charanjit M. Jaswinder Gill (Courtice, Canada), Gagan M. Rajinder Uppal (Brampton, Canada), Ishtpreet Brar (Ottawa, Canada), and Ishkmandeep M. Harjinder Sarwara (Calgary, Canada); twelve grandchildren, Shabroop M.
