Obituary of Herbert Murray Knowles

April 28, 1936 – Canobie, New Brunswick

January 4, 2024 – Cochrane, Alberta

Herbert “Herb” Knowles, a pillar of strength, a wealth of wisdom, and a beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at the age of 87.  He departed this world surrounded by the love of his family, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished for generations to come.

Born on April 28, 1936, Herb lived a life filled with purpose and devotion. Growing up in Canobie, NB, he learned the values of hard work, resilience, and the importance of family bonds. These principles guided him throughout his life, shaping the remarkable man he became.

As a successful businessman he owned and operated a Texaco service station, sold Ford farm machinery and was a part-time lobster fisherman. In the later years with his wife Shirley, he was the owner of an incorporated sawmill and forestry operation, which produced lumber to build homes. Herb dedicated himself to his work with unwavering commitment. His hands, calloused from years of labor, reflected not only a profession but a passion for the sea, land and its resources.

Herb was a loving husband to Shirley, and they were happily married for 58 years. He was extremely proud of his three daughters Ronda, Paula, and Audra, and was loved immensely by his grandchildren Haley, Sam, Renee, Andrew, Julia, and Zach. Family meant everything to him, and his nurturing spirit created a warm and loving home that became the heart of countless memories.

A man of unwavering integrity, Herb earned the respect and admiration of colleagues and friends alike in the forestry and sawmill industry. Beyond his professional achievements, he was known for his generosity, kindness, and willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need. His favorite expression was “I take one day at a time”, and he viewed life exactly that way, enjoying every day to its fullest. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas, and Pearl Knowles (nee Sealy), sister Marjorie, and his brothers Earl, Gerald, Hewlett, Russell, and Harper. He is survived by his sisters Leona, Edith, and Mabel.

As we mourn the loss of Herb, let us also celebrate the rich and meaningful life he lived. His legacy will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. In our grief, let us find comfort in the memories we shared, the lessons he taught, and the love that will continue to connect us.
