Lane Bickel

Obituary of Lane Clayton Bickel

April 23, 1942 – Calgary, Alberta

January 9, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

Lane died peacefully in Calgary, Alberta, after a long battle with Parkinson’s.

Lane was predeceased by his parents, Sidney Bickel (Smith) in 2008, and Harold Bickel in 2000. Lane is survived by his sister Bonnie (David Russell), and his brother Steven Bickel. Lane loved his family and will be greatly missed by his two daughters, Andrea (Rodney Booth) and Laura (Matthew Foley); his grandson Zachary, and his nieces Kai Lee and Taylor Russell.

Lane was born in Calgary and raised by his parents in Oklahoma, Columbia, and Venezuela before returning to Calgary for grade school. He graduated college from the University of Colorado at Boulder, with a Bachelor of Science in Statistics, and moved to Montreal, Quebec, in 1969 to work for Air Canada for 25 years, where he met and married Anne Elsie Bickel (Dwyer) in 1971. Lane returned to live in Calgary in 2014.

He was a fan of most sports and played badminton competitively at the national level, but playing golf was Lane’s true-life passion. As a member of the Royal Montreal Golf Club, the Glencoe Club, the Winston Golf Club, and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Lane competed in and won many club, provincial, national, and international competitions, both in individual and team play.

Lane was a seasoned world traveler who enjoyed discovering new foods and golf courses. He was always ready for a trip to a new city or country that involved both. He was a true and loyal friend to Denny McDermott and Cory McHugh until his passing. He had a wonderful life, filled with loving family, close friends, and plenty of golf!
