Obituary of Thomas Charles Ascroft

June 12, 1942 – Lethbridge, Alberta

January 13, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

Thomas “Tom” Ascroft, beloved husband of Margaret Ascroft, of Calgary, AB, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at the age of 81 years.

Tom was born in Lethbridge, Alberta, on June 12, 1942, and spent his childhood years in Lethbridge. Tom graduated from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, with a degree in Economics.

Tom married Margaret (nee Lamoureux) in 1970.

Tom accomplished much through his life and was particularly proud of his time spent in the telecom industry. Tom worked at Alberta Government Telephones (AGT) where he not only worked until he retired, but also met his wife Margaret “Marg”.

Tom and Marg wanted to see Eastern Canada, so Tom accepted a two-year transfer to Northern Telecom so they could explore the east. After two years in Ottawa, they moved back to Edmonton before relocating to Calgary, where he stayed until he retired from AGT at the age of 52.

Tom spent his retirement years supporting his family and taking on the duties at home while Marg continued to work. In his spare time, he supervised exams at the University of Calgary.

Tom could often be found reading, playing cards (cribbage), and watching sporting events on TV. He had a passion for the railway and would reminisce about his youth and spending time with his father who worked on the trains in Lethbridge. Tom enjoyed barbequing, even crafting his own blend of secret barbeque sauce, and he could be found at the grill several nights a week making dinner for his family.

Besides his loving wife Margaret, Tom is survived by his son, Cameron “Cam” Ascroft, who resides in Calgary, AB, his daughter Christina (Ascroft) Blakney and her husband Warren Blakney, who reside in Langdon, AB.

Tom is also survived by his sister-in-law Joan Ascroft of Lethbridge, AB, his nephew Tom Ascroft of Lethbridge, AB, his niece Stacy (Ascroft) Durand and her husband Brett Durand who reside in Olds, AB. Tom was predeceased by both his parents Thomas and Helen; and his brother Robert “Bob” Ascroft.
