Obituary of Jean Merkl

Jean Merkl of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at the age of 91 years.

She was born in Didsbury, AB, on February 19, 1932, the eighth of eleven children. They were a very close and loving family. Jean moved to Calgary in 1951, where she worked at the Eaton’s department store. She met John on a blind date in 1954 and it was love at first sight. They were married in 1955.

Mom and Dad loved to camp and their favorite place in the world was in the trailer. They loved to winter in Arizona and camp in the summer. Mom was so proud of her children and grandchildren and loved spending time with them. She was predeceased by John in 2003.

She is survived by her sons, Brian (Linda) Merkl and Brad (Pat) Merkl; her daughter Roxanne (David) Latimer, her grandchildren, Kevin, Will, Chelsea, Payden, Sarah, Joel, and Jon; and one great-grandchild Emmett. Jean is also survived by two brothers, Jack and Howard Persinger.

A Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Calgary Crematorium, 3219 – 4th Street NW, Calgary, AB, within the valley of Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Inurnment Service to follow at Calgary Crematorium, West Columbarium. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
