Steve Jones

Obituary of Steve Jones

September 30, 1945 - Nottingham, England

January 29, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

Phillip Stephen Lloyd Jones, known to most by Steve, some by Snowball, the Nikon guy, Dad and Grandpa, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 29, 2024, at the age of 78 years.

Steve was born on September 30, 1945, in Nottingham, England, above a bank, where he said he was born into money. His parents, Lloyd and Margaret Jones, moved to Winnipeg when Steve was still a baby and added his sister Stephanie to the family. The family spent time in Edmonton and then settled in Vancouver.

While attending UBC, Steve joined the Sport Car Club, where he made many lifelong friends and met the mother of his two children, Danna and Kyle. In 1974, Steve took a job representing Nikon, moved to Calgary, and that is where he stayed, both for work and life. In the 90s, Steve was travelling in Saskatchewan when he randomly bumped into an old family friend from Edmonton, Barbara Dodd, and as they say, “the rest is history”.

Barb and Steve shared 33 years together skiing, travelling to Mexico, and spending time with family at Granite Lake. For the last twelve years, they made Mesa their winter home to get away from the Alberta winters. Steve spent time on the golf course and on the shuffleboard courts, where he was known to win a dime or two. There was always something to do in Mesa, from baseball on Saturdays (best burgers in the park), to concerts and block parties. The last few months Steve spent time at home with his family and friends. The Jones’ competitive spirit was still strong with many crib games with Kyle, Danna, Darby, and Ayden. Steve was famous for telling a “Jones” story with sound effects that his grandkids delighted in.

Steve will be missed deeply and greatly by all those who knew him. Steve is survived by his wife, Barbara Dodd-Jones, his children, Danna (Ryan) and Kyle (Louise); grandchildren, Connor, Darby, Ayden and Ellie; his nephews, Duff and Tobin and their families; and Dexter and Dolly, the cats. He was preceded in death by his parents Margaret and Lloyd, Eleanor and Bill Dodd, and his sister Stephanie Rooney.

Steve was able to pass at home and the family would like to thank Melissa, Heather, and Dr. Wong for making this possible, showing Steve such dignity and respect, making it a peaceful experience for us all.

A Celebration of Steve’s Life will be held in the spring of 2024.
