Dennis Alfred Blas, born in Blairmore, Alberta on September 25, 1949, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2024, surrounded by his family. Dennis was a beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, and friend whose impact on the lives of those who knew him will forever be cherished.
Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 23 years Heather Compton of Calgary, AB; cherished daughter Lisa Blas (Gustin Johnson) of Calgary, AB; his devoted son Steve Blas (Brandi Shuttleworth) of Calgary, AB; and their mother Kathy Blas of Calgary, AB. He was a dedicated stepfather to Cameron (Shawna-Seah McDonald) and Kyle Yost both of Calgary, AB. He will be deeply missed by his three adoring grandchildren, Callie, Alexandra, and Dylan who shared countless precious moments playing and being silly with their beloved “Grumpa”. Dennis is also survived by his brother Ken Blair (James Farrell) of Medicine Hat, AB; sister Adele Thorne (Calvin); and his aunt Marilyn Barbour of Cochrane, AB; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends across North America.
Dennis was predeceased by his father Emile Blas and mother Eleanor Blas, both of Calgary, AB and his brother Robert Blair of Vancouver, BC.
Throughout his life, Dennis pursued numerous passions. He was an IT professional, a skilled woodworker, a motorcyclist, a published author, a part-time fisherman and full-time handyman, but Dennis was happiest traveling the world and exploring the Canadian Rockies or spending time with his family and community. His commitment to staying active and his willingness to pursue new adventures inspired many.
Dennis was a pillar of wisdom and friendship to those who held him dear. His capacity to provide guidance and support to others was one of his defining qualities, earning him the nickname “Yoda”.
In recent years, Dennis faced great adversity. He battled two cancer diagnoses and confronted mental health challenges that ultimately led to his early departure from this earth.
Dennis' memory continues through the stories and cherished memories shared by all who loved him. He was a remarkable man who left a lasting mark on those who had the privilege of knowing him and he will live on in the hearts of those he touched.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Rockyview General Hospital. Their care and support during his challenging times was invaluable.
A Celebration of Dennis’ Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Park Memorial, 5008 Elbow Drive SW, Calgary, AB) on Friday, February 23, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
