Obituary of James Ralph Ryan

January 27, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

 

James Ralph Ryan passed away on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the age of 74 years.

 

James, beloved husband of Barbara Ryan, lived in Calgary at the time of his passing. He was born on October 15, 1949, in Tokyo, Japan.

 

His family moved to Hawaii, where he attended the University of Hawaii and was in the Army ROTC program. He then moved to Canada where he would spend the rest of his days. He married Barbara Amthor in 2012.

 

James was a dedicated Bellman at the Calgary Marriott Downtown for many years. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the news. He enjoyed collecting stamps and reading about history, warships, and rare stamps. He was a member of the Philatelic Society for Greater Southern Africa and wrote a regular column called “The Bookie Reports” for their journal Forerunners. He was also a member of the Calgary Philatelic Society.

 

James loved his family and was a devoted husband. He is survived by his stepson Justin Amthor, stepdaughter Cindy Amthor, and two step-grandchildren, Trinity McCulloch and Liam McCulloch. He is also survived by his two brothers, John Ryan and Jerome Ryan.

 

James will be remembered for his kind heart.
