Obituary of Else Elin Svendsen

May 14, 1928 - Buskjarhus, Hellisgo, Thy, Denmark

January 28, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

Else Elin Svendsen (Mikkelsen), born May 14, 1928 in Buskjarhus, Hellisgo, Thy, Denmark, passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2024.

Else is survived by her last Mikkelsen brother, Erik (Gerda) Mikkelsen of Bedsted, Thy, Denmark, son Stephen (Caroline), and numerous family and friends in Denmark, the USA, and Canada.

Else was predeceased by her husband of 65 years Gilbert Svendsen and passed at the same time as her son Mark.

On a Dare from her sister Ellen, mom and aunt Ellen together sailed to Canada onboard the SS Oslofjord and docked on Pier 21 in Halifax. They took the train across Canada to land at Victoria, BC. She had no idea how large Canada was. After some time, mom moved to Calgary, where she met dad, and they married in 1956 at Sharon Lutheran Church and they raised their two sons and would spend the rest of her life. When she came to Canada, she could not speak English, so with her sister and a newspaper they learned. Our family moved to Southwood in the late 60s and became a member of Lutheran Church of the Cross. My Mom met so many incredible friends at this, our Home Church. Mom loved to go camping at Shuswap Lake Provincial Park in British Columbia, working with her flowers, spending time with friends and family and she found great comfort in studying the bible.
