Obituary of Catherine Tumbach

July 31, 1932 – Sceptre, Saskatchewan

February 13, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts and the warmest of memories we announce our farewell to Catherine Tumbach (nee Berger), who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the age of 91. As a devoted mother, nurturing grandmother, loving sister, caring aunt, and loyal friend, Catherine’s genuine spirit created a connection that enriched the lives of those who knew her.

Catherine was born at the Berger Homestead on the Saskatchewan Prairies near Sceptre. She held a special place as the only sister among her six brothers. Catherine’s presence in the family was nothing short of indispensable. She played a vital role in helping her mother with tasks like milking cows, tending gardens, feeding animals, and making meals. Her unwavering selflessness and resilience earned her brothers’ admiration, making her a revered figure in the family. Catherine had a deep affection for school; the thought of missing classes, especially during Harvest time, brought tears to her eyes. When she was 21, Gerry Tumbach discovered his true love in Catherine, and they initiated their journey together by exchanging vows in Prelate. Soon after, they relocated to Moose Jaw, the birthplace of all four of her sons. In 1975, the family moved to Calgary, marking the beginning of Catherine’s career at The Bay. Her time there was a source of immense joy, filled with great times and lasting friendships.

Catherine found happiness in the simple pleasures of life, making cinnamon buns and heartwarming meals, such as her renowned cream chicken. She graciously opened her heart and home to both family and friends. Her legacy is one of hospitality, generosity, and an enduring commitment to those she loved. She gave unconditional love and support to her four sons and had deeply meaningful and special relationships with each of them. Catherine possessed a rare and magnetic quality that made her beloved by all. Her endearing wit, wisdom, and straightforward nature made her uniquely charming and a cherished presence. This authenticity and humour left an unforgettable impression on the hearts of all who knew her. She will always be our one and only, “Catherine the Great!” May her memory continue to be a source of comfort and inspiration.

Catherine is survived by her adoring sons, Maurice (Janice), Michael (Angie), Ken (Barb), and Robert (Shelly); as well as her grandchildren, Miranda, Dustin, Michael, and Megan; and great-grandchildren, Kye and Maya. She will also be held dear in the hearts of her younger brothers, Jerome, Jim, and Ron, along with many relatives and friends.

Catherine was predeceased by her husband, Gerry, her brothers, Roy, Frank, and Victor; her dearest aunts, Rose, Phyl, and Margaret; and her treasured parents, Jacob and Mary.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Renata Kondel, Catherine’s niece, whose unwavering support, kindness, and constant advocacy for Catherine’s best interests throughout her courageous battle with cancer were truly invaluable. Additionally, they extend their appreciation to the compassionate staff at Fish Creek United Active Living, Catherine’s Palliative Home Care Team, especially Sarah and Lindsay V., along with Catherine’s dedicated oncologist, Dr. Michael Wong.
