Obituary of Douglas Robert Goodwin
January 13, 1938 - January 29, 2024
On Monday, January 29, 2024 Douglas Goodwin, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 86.
Doug was born on January 13, 1938 in Bellevue, Alberta. He was a very hard-working man. He worked as a mechanic for International Harvester, Cummins, and later at Kaiser Mine in Sparwood. In his early 50s, he became a very successful businessman in the trucking industry, owning Freightliner dealerships in Calgary, Lethbridge, and Red Deer.
He had a passion for horses and rode his friend, “Bart” into his 80s. Doug loved his family, especially spending time with all his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
During his retirement, he enjoyed volunteering at Therapeutic Riding in Nanton and the South Campus Hospital. Doug supported many charities, including the Calgary Children’s Hospital and The Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Doug loved his home in Whitefish, Montana, where he enjoyed golfing, skiing, boating and socializing with his many friends. He often said it was his favourite place on earth.
He is survived by his loving wife Carol, daughters Brenda (Wayne), Christine (Robert) and Connie (Robert). His grandchildren Kari (Richard), Heather (Eric), Jennifer (Joel), Scott, David, Laura (Scott) and Holly (Nick) and great-grandchildren Isaac, Hailey, Avery, Ben, Maci, Ella, Bella and Isla. He is also survived by his sister Joan Vare.
Doug was predeceased by his father Albert and mother Elizabeth, and his great-grandson Nathan.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to a charity of your choice.
A Celebration of Doug’s Life will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road SE, Calgary, AB) on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
