Obituary of Avis Eva Bonnell

Avis Bonnell of Calgary, AB, peacefully departed from this world, surrounded by her loving family, on Friday, February 2, 2024, at the age of 87 years.

 

Avis Eva Bonnell, youngest of three children of Loretta and Henry Holte, was born on January 21, 1937, in Tofield, AB. Avis spent most of her childhood living in small towns in Alberta and eventually joined her older siblings, sister Norma and brother Frank, in Calgary. She began her career as a telephone operator at AGT. During this time, she met the love of her life, Richard Bonnell, and they married on November 4, 1961. Avis and Richard were blessed with two children, Karen and Susan, whom Avis cherished dearly.

 

Family was paramount to Avis, and she spared no effort to ensure special occasions were celebrated by hosting large family gatherings. Avis relished meeting people, sharing humorous stories and jokes, and fostering meaningful conversations. Avis briefly worked as a part-time sales associate at The Bay, sharing her great sense of style with customers. Additionally, she passionately expressed herself through crafts like sewing, knitting, and painting ceramics when she had the time.

 

During summers, Avis and Richard frequented their cozy cabin in Nelson, BC. They ardently shared their joy with loved ones, extending warm invitations for family and friends to join them in exploring natural beauty and engaging in fun activities. Ensuring everyone had an unforgettable experience, they created numerous, precious memories destined to last a lifetime.

 

Avis and Richard also spent time travelling. They explored and enjoyed Hawaii a couple of times and a family trip to Japan, Taiwan, China, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. Later, they visited New York and New Orleans and cruised the Panama Canal and the Atlantic.

 

Throughout her life, Avis touched the hearts of many with her kindness and grace. Her memory will forever be cherished by all who knew her. Avis was indeed a “Limited Edition.”

 

Avis is survived by her devoted daughters, Karen (Doug) Robson and Susan (Steve) Walton; as well as her cherished grandchildren, Garrett (Taylor) Robson, Emma Robson, Chelsea (Matt Rodgers) Walton, and Ben Walton; and great-grandchildren, Odin and Bjorn Robson, and Juniper and Jasper Walton-Rodgers. Additionally, she is remembered fondly by her nieces, nephews, cousins, and surviving brother, Frank Holte. Avis was predeceased by her husband Richard P. Bonnell, and her sister Norma Sikstrom.

 

The family expresses profound gratitude to Kristen Thorell for her eleven-year friendship and nursing care for Avis. We will always remember how grateful she was to have you in her life. Additionally, heartfelt thanks to the compassionate caregivers of the Journey Club, including nurses, serving staff, cleaning staff, and concierge, for their unwavering care, kindness, and respect shown to Avis. Special thanks to Dr. Leonard and his team for their exceptional care during her final days and Dr. Morris for his years of dedication to managing her rheumatoid arthritis with utmost kindness and expertise.

 

At present, the family has no plans for a memorial service.
