Obituary of Sylvia F. DeLauretis
May 18, 1963 - Oshawa, Ontario
February 18, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
Sylvia DeLauretis of Calgary, AB, passed away suddenly on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at the age of 60 years. Sylvia was born in Oshawa, ON, on May 18, 1963.
Sylvia is survived by her mother Maria DeLauretis and predeceased by her father Antonio DeLauretis, both of Ontario; she is also survived by her older sister Josephine, her younger brother Enrico and sister-in-law Heather, her younger sister Marie, her nephew Broden, and her nieces, Aria, Kiana, and Enkayla, who all reside in Calgary.
As a young adult, Sylvia moved to Calgary in 1982 and worked tirelessly at various jobs, from retail to the Alberta Stock Exchange. She eventually obtained her accounting designation and established her own accounting practice. She had the pleasure of working many years alongside her beloved sisters, Josephine and Marie DeLauretis. Sylvia loved her career as a professional accountant, often creating long-term relationships with many of her clients. When you asked her why she loved accounting so much, her favorite response and saying was, “Because every number tells a story.”
Sylvia enjoyed spending time with her family, being outdoors, and going to different island destinations during her vacations. Her favorite destination to visit was Maui, Hawaii. While Sylvia enjoyed the sunshine of the Caribbean and other tropical places, she also loved the snow-capped mountains of the Canadian Rockies and learned to ski. Sylvia shared this love of skiing and going on ski trips with her siblings, nieces, and nephew; her most memorable moments were always with her family, extended family, and friends, hiking in the mountains, skiing down a green or blue run, rafting down a whitewater river, visiting Disney World as a family, and of course soaking in the sunshine on beautiful sandy beaches.
Sylvia never missed the opportunity to celebrate traditional holidays and customs. Christmas, Valentine’s, Easter, Thanksgiving, and milestone birthdays of her family members were incredibly important to her and were often celebrated over dinners and her traditional “Tea-Time” spread. The Calgary Stampede was no exception in terms of customs and celebrations to partake in, and Sylvia, a country girl at heart and a country music lover, relished in the idea of a two-step on a saloon dance floor.
Nurturing came naturally to Sylvia. She was a most helpful individual and such a loving daughter, sister, aunt, niece, and cousin. Her family, and her nieces and nephew, provided her with an immense amount of joy. She will be most remembered for her generosity, diplomacy, numerical wizardry, and her desk-slapping contagious laugh. A motto of Sylvia’s that will live on through her family is, “Every challenge has a solution.”
