Obituary of John Szeka Lau 劉思嘉

February 19, 1943 – Baishi, China

February 28, 2024 – Edmonton, Alberta

On Wednesday, February 28, 2024, John Lau, beloved husband of Kam Har Lau, passed away peacefully at the age of 81 years.

Born in Baishi, Taishan, Guangdong, Jiangmen, Guangdong Province, China, John immigrated to Hong Kong, where he graduated from culinary school and worked as a chef for 50 years. He then moved to the Dominican Republic before settling in Edmonton, AB, Canada in 1972. John married Kam Har Lau on April 22, 1971, and together they owned several successful restaurants, where they delighted customers with their delicious food.
 

He was also a cherished member of the Taiwan Universities Alumni Association and the Fukienese Association of Alberta.

Aside from his love for cooking, John enjoyed playing card games and traveling. One of his most memorable vacations was when he visited Eastern Canada, New York, and Boston, at the age of 72 with his family.
 

John Lau will be remembered for his sense of humor, always making those around him laugh, and creating fond memories for his loved ones. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

John will be deeply missed by his wife of 53 years, Kam Har Lau, and his two sons, Princeton (Chia-Ling Li) Lau, and Jason Lau. He will also be remembered by his two grandsons, Aiden and Desmond Lau; two brothers, Patrick (Patricia) and Steed Lau; and his two sisters, Vienna Hou and Vanessa (Raymond) Wong; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

John was predeceased by his mother Tam Yuen Sheung, and father Lau Kay, both buried in Hong Kong.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Deerfoot South, 12281 – 40th Street SE, Calgary, AB) on Friday, March 15, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. A reception will follow from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Royal Taste Chinese Cuisine (2825 32 Ave NE, Calgary, AB T1Y 6J1).
