Obituary of Hope Madsen (nee Glencross)

February 2, 1933 – Ottawa, Ontario

March 4, 2024 – Red Deer, Alberta

Hope Madsen, beloved wife of the late Andrew Madsen, (November 6, 1926 - January 4, 2019), of Red Deer, AB, passed away on Monday, March 4, 2024, at the age of 91 years.

Hope was born in Ottawa, ON on February 2, 1933. She moved to Calgary, AB in 1978. When Hope was nineteen, she enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (during the Korean War). Her rank was Leading Aircraftwoman and worked in the Control Tower on base in Chatham, ON.

Hope married Andrew in 1982 and together they combined their adult children, Debbie, Gerry and Erin and Gord, Kathy, and Marlene, into one big happy family! They travelled to many places around the world and enjoyed their retirement years in Arizona, golfing and socializing with their Snowbird friends and new acquaintances.

Hope accomplished much throughout her life and was particularly proud of her figure skating in her younger years and her drawing and watercolor paintings which brought her much pleasure in her elder years. She was creatively talented in so many ways, she would draw the pictures and make templates for Andy’s beautiful stained-glass work. Together they were like “Two Peas in a Pod” and complimented each others’ talents with their own.

Hope is survived by her two daughters, Debbie McCauley, who resides in Victoria, BC, and Erin (Ken) Blakely who reside in Red Deer, AB; son Gerry (Mona) Collins who reside in London, England; stepson Gordon (Joan) Madsen; and her stepdaughters, Kathleen (Ted) Sutton and Marlene Madsen.

Through Hope’s daughter Erin and son-in-law Ken, she has two grandchildren, Jay (Stephanie) who reside in Calgary, AB and Ashley who resides in Red Deer, AB; and five great-grandchildren, Teo, Wynn, Jackson, Griffin, and one more due in July 2024. On the Madsen side, Hope has many additional grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Hope is also survived by her younger sister Connie Sigmund of Ottawa, ON and three nephews, Michael McGowan, Robert Duncan and Hal Sigmund. Hope was predeceased by her twin sister Faith Gow, who passed away October 14, 2022.
