Obituary of Jeanette Ruth Homan
December 12, 1942 - Edmonton, Alberta
February 29, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta
Jeanette Homan (nee Hubbard), beloved wife of the late Howard Ralph Homan, of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at the age of 81 years.
Jeanette was born in Edmonton, AB, on December 12,1942. She married Howard Homan in Edmonton in 1960. They moved to Calgary, AB, in 1974 and bought their first home in the Palliser area.
She had worked most of her career with TD Bank in Calgary as well as at First Calgary, before her retirement. She had also volunteered with the United Way for a portion of her career.
Jeanette accomplished much throughout her life and was particularly proud of her children, grandchildren, and her close-knit relationships with friends.
Jeanette was a woman who always took on a challenge. Whether it be sewing her granddaughter's dance costumes, knitting fancy dishcloths, or baking the most delicious desserts, she always found a way to add her "sweetness" to everything. She particularly enjoyed travelling to Mexico, Hawaii, and going on cruises. She had a busy social life with many friends; going for regular weekly breakfasts, enjoying a good movie night, dancing, any dinner or activity at her condo, or going to her daughter’s for a pancake breakfast every Sunday, “where the food was always better”, as she had always said.
Jeanette enjoyed traveling to Hawaii with her husband Howard. Feet in the sand, soaking up the sun, and a good book was all she needed. She specifically enjoyed Honolulu, where she was intertwined in the hustle and bustle of the busy city, always people-watching and enjoying the small moments in life.
Jeanette will be most remembered for her utmost devotion to the ones she loved, witty sense of humor, and ability to be strong when no one else could. She was a gentle, caring, and compassionate woman who touched everyone's heart that was around her. She was a selfless woman who always ensured her children and grandchildren had rides from school and activities, warm home cooked meals, and big bear-hugs.
Matthew and Becky call her "grandma sweetheart", which perfectly explains who Jeanette was. She knew how to light up a room, whether it was passing out shots of Fireball as a flower girl at her granddaughter's wedding, or being the first one to get up to dance when the dance floor opened, or just being someone you could call and would have an open ear to listen when you were having a bad day. Jeanette was a very special lady, and she will be missed deeply by all her friends and family.
Jeanette had a special connection with her cat, Ron. Ron was rescued from AARCS, and Jeanette spoiled him beyond belief. He was her cuddle buddy, and they had a very loyal and special friendship.
Jeanette is survived by her daughter, Linnet Schumaker (nee Homan), and her son Howard “Howie” of Calgary, AB; five grandchildren, Matthew Schumaker (Sean), and Becky Schumaker (Alex) of Calgary, AB, Megan (Aaron) Armstrong of Moncton, NB, Mason Homan of Miramichi, NB, and Maddie (Charles) Homan of Saint John, NB. Jeanette is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
Jeanette was predeceased by her son, James “Jimmy” Homan in 1963, father Russell Hubbard in 1978, her beloved sister Georgina “Georgie” Bachor in 1997, her mother Margaret Gilliland in 2004, her beloved husband of 53 years, Howard Homan, in 2013, and son-in-law Wade Schumaker in 2013.
