Obituary of Mitchell Dennis Molloy

October 10, 1965 – Red Lake, Ontario

March 3, 2024 – Revelstoke, British Columbia

It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of Mitchell Dennis Molloy on Sunday, March 3, 2024, in an accident in Revelstoke, BC.

Mitch was born in Red Lake, ON, on October 10, 1965, to Donna Molloy (nee Wynne) and Peter Dennis Molloy. Mitch is survived by his children, Brendan and Gillian Molloy of Calgary, AB; his sister Melanie (Dan) Collins of North Bay, ON; his nieces, Carly Collins of North Bay, ON, and Sydney Collins of Barrie, ON; his uncle Reg (Susan) Molloy, and his cousin Paul (Laura) Molloy of Red Lake, ON. He also leaves to mourn his partner Rachel Jones, his former spouse Kim Molloy, the Kiss family, and his close friend Neil Roszell. A vast network of friends, acquaintances, and business associates across North America will also greatly miss Mitch. He was predeceased by his parents, Dennis and Donna Molloy; and his cousin, Jodi Molloy.

Mitch grew up in the small town of Balmertown, ON, and spent his childhood in this close-knit community that shaped his values, work ethic, and love of the outdoors. A gifted athlete, he competed in many sports, but his passion and focus were playing hockey. After high school, he played college hockey, which led to signing with the Buffalo Sabres as a free agent and a career in various American minor leagues. He retired from the sport in 1993 after a career-ending injury.

Forever a student of the market, he moved to Calgary to pursue a business career, which began as an investment advisor at Midland Walwyn. In 1998, Mitch was hired at Peters & Co. Ltd. as a retail investment advisor, and he helped grow the firm in increasingly influential roles during his eighteen-year tenure, including Managing Director of Trading, Executive Committee member, and ultimately Managing Director of Capital Markets. Known for his assertive and instinctual trading style, Mitch was a notable figure in oil and gas investment banking until he retired in 2019.

An avid outdoorsman and forever athlete, he revelled in trying new sports. He thoroughly enjoyed his adventures: fishing, dirt biking, hiking, sledding, snow biking, and practicing a dedicated fitness lifestyle. Especially later in his life, Mitch was an avid traveller, and spending time in and discovering new places and cultures was a great source of joy for him. However, the relationships in his life mattered most to Mitch. He was a dedicated, loving father, brother, partner, and friend. Being a father was one of the greatest joys of his life, and he was unbelievably honoured and proud of his children for everything they did. His mentorship, influence, and humble generosity with those he held close, and the community at large was bar none, and his death is an unimaginable loss for us all.

We thank those involved in the rescue attempt on March 3 and for everyone’s support since Mitch died. We are immensely grateful for the outpouring of love and care and the touching anecdotes showing how Mitch made a difference in your lives.

As per Mitch’s wishes, a private celebration of life will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Mitch’s name, may be made directly to the Calgary Inter-Faith Food Bank Society, 5000 – 11 Street S.E., Calgary, AB T2H 2Y5, Telephone: (403) 253-2059, www.calgaryfoodbank.com or Revelstoke Search and Rescue, 404 Campbell Avenue, Revelstoke, BC, V0E 2SO, www.revsar.ca.
