Obituary of Alan Tat Keung Wong 黃達強

Alan Wong, beloved husband of Barbara Wong, and father of Helen and Janice Wong, of Calgary, AB, passed away at the age of 69 years on Thursday, March 7, 2024.

Alan was born in Hong Kong on December 11, 1954, and immigrated to Canada in 1973. To build a better life for his family, Alan made the difficult decision to return to school to pursue a nursing career while raising a young family and juggling full-time work. Alan graduated from the Foothills Hospital School of Nursing (class of 1991) and notably was the only Chinese male in his graduating class.

Alan dedicated his life to caring for others and had a wonderful 30+ year career with Carewest. Alan was a healthcare leader who worked at several Carewest facilities across Calgary, including George Boyack, Glenmore Park, Signal Pointe, and the Dr. Vernon Fanning Center. A significant contribution Alan made was the establishment of the Carewest Rehabilitation & Community Transition Program — significantly improving the Alberta healthcare system by increasing access to acute beds at three emergency hospitals. Alan retired from Carewest in 2016, only to return to his duties during the COVID pandemic. In his last act of servitude and selflessness, he took on the challenging roles of Administrator & Director of Care for the Victoria Chinatown Care Centre (2020-2021).

Alan’s beloved pastime hobby was karaoke, and his daughters have fond memories of fishing trips, movie dates, and endless food adventures. Alan also had wonderful travel-adventures with his wife Barbara. Over the years, they travelled all over the world and collected fond memories with family and friends. Alan was a devoted husband, father, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Alan is survived by his wife, Barbara Wong, his two daughters, Helen and Janice Wong; his son-in-law Shawn Hicks, and his precious granddogs, Dexter, Olive, and Charles.

A public funeral service will be held in his honour at McInnis & Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB), on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., followed by a graveside service at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.

Thank you to all who have been a part of Alan's life and supported him throughout his journey. His legacy of compassion and selflessness will continue to inspire those who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
