Obituary of Thomas Khen Kuet Then

It is with great sadness that we announce that Thomas Then, beloved husband of Cecilia (nee Bong) of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at the age of 74 years.

Thomas was born in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia, on November 12, 1949. He moved to Calgary, AB, Canada in 1976, and became a Canadian Citizen in 1979.

In 1980, he returned to Malaysia and married his beloved partner Cecilia at the St. Joseph Church of Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. Together they moved to Calgary, AB, Canada to start their new life and family.

Thomas graduated from SAIT and worked hard for his family as a welder. He also had an interest in food and cuisine and took courses in the culinary arts. Thomas was a quiet and private man, and family was very important to him. He enjoyed watching his family grow over the years, and being involved in the lives of his grandchildren brought much joy to him.

He will be most remembered for his courage, strength, and determination as he battled against cancer.

Besides his loving wife, Thomas is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jovia Bera and Shubhankar Bera; his son and daughter-in-law, Victor Then and Chisako Nozaki-Then; his two grandsons, Eshaan Bera and Tristan Nozaki-Then; as well as his granddaughter Anjali Bera, all of whom reside in Calgary, AB.

Thomas was the youngest sibling of seven and had three brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his brothers, Peter Then of Vancouver, BC, and Jacob Then of Malaysia.

Thomas is predeceased by his parents, Pin Khiam Then and Nyuk Tau Chai; oldest brother Phillip Then, and his three sisters, Mary Then, Anna Then, and Maria Then.

As per Thomas’ wishes a private service will be held.
