Obituary of William Richard BOSWELL

July 15, 1931 – Calgary, Alberta March 1, 2018 – Calgary, Alberta Bill Boswell passed away peacefully at Rocky View General Hospital after a short stay on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at the age of 86 years. He is survived by his six children, Pat (Jayne), Rich (Anne), Pete (Brenda), Nancy (Doug), Francine (Phil) and Bill (Jenn); as well as nineteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of sixty years, Hazel; grandson Greg Boswell; mother Josephine; and sisters, Audrey and Mary. Bill was a born and bred proud third generation Calgarian. His formative years were spent growing up in East Calgary –“now known as Inglewood” he would often say. As the only male in his household, Dad was a provider from a young age. Always a risk-taker Dad found success as an Independent Oilman and with Mom’s unwavering support they raised the six of us, educating us in sports, business and life. Dad was an avid golfer and horseman. He learned the game of golf at a young age at Inglewood Golf Course and went on to play and enjoy memberships at numerous courses in Calgary, Vancouver and Palm Desert, CA. He achieved eight hole-in-ones well… really nine but there was no one there to witness… Dad’s second passion was breeding and racing horses. His proudest accomplishments were going to the Queen’s Plate and the 1995 Kentucky Derby with “Lake George”. He bred a Breeder’s Cup sprint horse “Greg’s Gold” named after his grandson Greg. Dad’s horses raced in numerous stakes and derby races in Canada and the U.S. In addition Dad also supported local sports and in the early 1970’s owned both the Calgary Centennials Junior A hockey team and Calgary Stampeders Senior A hockey team. Dad was successful in many of his ventures over the years and made lots of friends along the way. He enjoyed special long-time friendships with George Hill of Calgary and Lee Tupper of Vancouver. Dad always enjoyed travelling to different countries and learning bits of their language. He was quick to try out his language skills whenever he encountered someone from a country he had visited. Dad’s later years were very challenging for him with the loss of Mom – we are happy that he has finally been reunited with her and is at peace. We will miss his unique sense of humour, great stories of the old days, warm smile and courageous heart. If friends so desire memorial tributes in Bill’s name may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 119 14th Street N.W, #200 Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6. Our family would like to thank Dr. Anna Stys and Dr. Supriya Goyal for their exceptional care and attention over the years. We will always be grateful to his caregivers Ning Griffith and Gina B Lim. As well we would like to thank the medical staff of Unit 74 Rocky View General Hospital for their care, compassion and patience with Dad these past weeks.
