Obituary of Eva Katherine Meyers
March 14, 1933 – Brandon, Manitoba
March 27, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Eva Meyers (nee McLaren) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at her residence in Calgary, AB, surrounded by family, at the age of 91 years.
Eva was born in Brandon, MB, on March 14, 1933, and spent her childhood on the family farm near Sinclair, MB. After her mother’s early passing, Eva was raised by her dad, with the loving support of her aunt Margaret and uncle Clifford. When asked what she remembered most in her younger years, it was her Shetland pony “Mickey” that followed her around like a puppy (he knew she had sugar in her pocket). In her early career as a lab technician, Eva excelled at conducting electrocardiographs and blood sugar tests.
At the age of seventeen, she met her husband Earl at a college dance, marking the beginning of a lifelong partnership. They married in Brandon, MB, on June 28, 1952, and were blessed with four children. Earl’s career in the farm implement business with International Harvester moved them to Weyburn, SK, as a sales representative. Then, in 1962, they purchased shares at the Boundary Motors IH dealership in Estevan, SK. During their time in Estevan, they made great friends and enjoyed square dancing, round dancing, camping, and travelling. We can still visualize Mom in her crinoline and homemade skirt, with a matching shirt for Dad (that she likely had sewn), smiling and leaving the house on Saturday night to go dancing! The two of them were natural dance partners!
After retiring in 1983, Earl and Eva travelled extensively and spent many fine winters in Mesa, Arizona. They moved to Calgary in 1990 to be closer to family. Eva’s creative talents blossomed over the years, as she explored knitting, crocheting, tatting, and tole painting. In her last years, she continued using her skill with colours by colouring with pencil crayons and needle felting. She found these crafts very relaxing.
Eva is survived by her son Terry (Teri) Meyers of Paradise Hill, SK, her three daughters, Heather (Jeremy) Miles of Calgary, AB, Laurie Ward of Nanaimo, BC, and Jackie (Miles) Nixon of Calgary, AB; her six grandchildren, Shannon (Kevin) Imhoff of Paradise Hill, SK, Kent (Amanda) Miles of Calgary, AB, Andrew Dalke of Nanaimo, BC, Kathryn (Scott) Swiston of Calgary, AB, Reid Nixon of Calgary, AB, and Ian Miles of Calgary, AB; and her two great-granddaughters, Shaylene (Heikki) Miller of Grande Prairie, AB, and Shelby Imhoff of Paradise Hill, SK. She was excited to meet her next great-grandchild, unborn Swiston of Calgary, AB, in June. Eva is also survived by her stepsister Jean (Gerry) Gatey of Virden, MB, her sister-in-law Fay Sandercock of Ridgetown, ON, and her sister-in-law Joan Meyers of North York, ON, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Eva was predeceased by her loving husband, Earl Meyers, in 2010, and her parents, Wilfred and Francis McLaren. She was also predeceased by her son-in-law Jack Ward in 2004 and her brother-in-law Jack Meyers in 2024.
Special thanks to the staff at Staywell Manor for their exemplary care and love over the past thirteen and a half years.
