Obituary of Dudley Tripp Hunter Gerry

October 21, 1929 - Sunderland, England

March 28, 2024 - Calgary, Alberta

In the late afternoon of Thursday, March 28, 2024, Dudley passed away peacefully at AgeCare Glenmore, Calgary, AB, with his wife Sylvia, and daughters, Janet and Kate, by his side. Dudley was 94 years old and died of natural causes.

Born October 21, 1929, to parents Poppy and Harold Gerry, who immigrated to Canada from Scotland. Dudley started out as a quiet boy and grew into a charismatic powerhouse of energy, known for his sharp sense of humour and observations of life. He worshipped his older brother Reg Gerry. Reg was a cowboy and pilot with the RAF and lost his life on a bombing mission in August 1940. Growing up in the foothills of Southern Alberta near Lundbreck in the 1930s, fly fishing and spending time outdoors were Dudley’s passions. He later moved to Calgary where he attended Western Canada High School.

A natural athlete, Dudley was a sprinter, enjoyed playing community hockey with friends, and football for UBC and the Western All-Stars Team. He loved hunting with his dogs, fly fishing, swimming, downhill and cross-country skiing. He met and married the love of his life, Sylvia Webb, in 1967 and they raised two daughters together.  Dudley loved his dogs Hamish, Pancho, Duke, Hoss, Cooper, and Deez, grand-pugs Lou and Tarra, and cats Jimmy, Blackie, and Smokey with all his heart.

Dudley was an artist who honoured the landscapes of Alberta with his paintbrush. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia. He also worked for BC Telecom and Alberta Gas Trunk Line. After marrying Sylvia, he earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary and worked for the Calgary Board of Education, teaching social studies, art, and outdoor/hunter education. He coached junior high girls’ basketball. Dudley had his own landscaping and pruning business.

Family, friends, neighbours, the dog park community, and his caregivers at AgeCare Glenmore will keep Dudley’s vibrant spirit alive in their hearts and collective memories.

Funeral Services will be held at Anglican Parish of Christ Church (3602 – 8th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. Reception to follow in the Church Hall.
