Obituary of Maria Honig
March 25, 1966 – Opladen, Germany
March 31, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Maria Honig of Calgary, AB, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2024, at the age of 58 years.
Maria was born in Opladen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on March 25, 1966, to parents Caecilia and Dieter Honig, living alongside five other siblings.
On August 24, 1976, Maria’s life took on a new direction. It was then the entire family immigrated to Canada, leaving behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; an event that shaped much of her future.
She first attended Westbrook School, north of Cochrane on Highway 22, then Manachaban Middle School in Cochrane, and ultimately Cochrane High School, where she graduated in 1984.
After graduation, she was determined to find employment and started her career as a bakery attendant at Food 4 Less at the Calgary Crowfoot location, which later changed into Safeway. Her career with Safeway spanned over decades, and she enjoyed the interaction with customers and her co-workers, many of whom became her friends.
Maria was fascinated with cats; be it calendars, pictures, clips, videos, and sharing her love with many over the years. It was a sad moment for her when she no longer could share her space with one, as she moved into assisted living. She enjoyed spending time watching and recording the wildlife around her and would share clips of birds and rabbits with friends and family.
She passed away from complications of COPD after many years of suffering. Many thanks to all her doctors, nurses, and caregivers who helped make her life more enjoyable. A special thank you to Dr. Sharma, who took care of Maria in her final days, as well as Louis, her nurse at the Dulcina Hospice, who showed incredible patience and understanding.
Maria is survived by her sisters, Regina Manke and Theresia Honig of Germany; her brothers, Richard Honig (Denise) and Stephan Honig of Calgary; nieces, Samantha and Christine Honig of Calgary; nephew Fabian Manke (Angelina) of Germany, sister-in-law Huong Le of Edmonton, as well as numerous relatives in Germany. Maria was predeceased by her father Dieter, her mother Caecilia, brother Franz Honig, and brother-in-law Dieter Manke.
