Obituary of Hilda Cox

April 8, 1937 – Blackhill, Consett, Durham County, England

April 10, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hilda Cox, our beloved wife, mother, and Nana, on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at the age of 87 years.

Hilda counted her riches in life by the moments she spent with her family and those she loved most. She will be remembered as a kind, humble, and generous woman who made an impression on everyone who was fortunate enough to know her.

Hilda was born in Consett Co. Durham, England, on April 8, 1937, the eldest of three sisters. Growing up, she was involved in church youth groups and choir and enjoyed the opportunity to participate in dance competitions as a member of the Northwest Durham Folk Dance and Song Society.

Upon graduation, she completed the three-year nursing program at Shotley Bridge General Hospital. In 1958, she met a young Canadian doctor while working in the hospital’s casualty department. An offer to show him Durham Cathedral blossomed into a whirlwind romance and they married a few months later. Alan and Hilda sailed to Canada the following day and settled in Moose Jaw, SK, where she was blessed with the arrival of her three children.

In 1971, the family moved to Calgary and Hilda created a loving home filled with joy, friends, and family. She volunteered for school trips and Girl Guides and belonged to parent committees for the Stampede Band and Calgary Track West. In addition, her association with Calgary Medical Ladies brought her many years of pleasure and lasting friendships.

Hilda was a fabulous cook and baking sweets was her specialty. She was also a talented seamstress who loved quilting, knitting, and needlework. After retirement, Hilda and Alan became world travellers, avid bridge players, and lovers of history and the arts. A highlight of retirement was the many springtime trips to the Royal Scot in Victoria.

Hilda was predeceased by her son David in 2022, and leaves behind her husband of 64 years, Alan, daughters Ruth (Brad) and Jane (Mike); granddaughters Michelle (Anson), Samantha, Alison (Andrej), and Lauren; her sisters Margaret and Rosalind in England; the Saskatchewan family, and several nieces and nephews who will all miss her.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB), on Friday, April 26, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Hospitality Centre at the Funeral Home.
