Obituary of Helen Mary Squires

It is with great sadness that the family of Helen Squires (née Ulrich), announce her passing on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at the age of 93 years.

 

Helen will be remembered as a loving and kind person. She cared deeply for her family and was a wonderful wife and mother. She faced many challenges in her final years and met them with great courage and strength. She will be deeply missed.

 

Helen is survived by her children, Karen Squires, Glen Squires, and Laurie (Joseph) Frantz; grandsons, Jackson (Anna) Frantz and Cole Frantz; and great-granddaughter Paige Frantz of Calgary. She is also survived by her brother Father Albert Ulrich O.M.I. and sister-in-law Mathilda “Hilda” Ulrich.

 

She was predeceased by her loving husband William “Bill” Donald Squires, her parents, John and Anna Ulrich; and siblings, Josephine (August) Sittler, Lawrence (Rose) Ulrich, Leroy (Helen) Ulrich, Raymond (Margaret) Ulrich, and Donald Ulrich.

 

Helen was born on her family farm near Cavell, SK, on July 16, 1930. She attended high school in Leipzig, SK. Helen graduated with her R.N. from St. Paul's Hospital School of Nursing, Saskatoon, in 1951. She married her loving husband Bill Squires in Wilkie, SK, in 1955. They spent many happy years together.

 

She worked as a surgical nurse in Saskatoon, North Battleford, Invermay, Watrous, and Moose Jaw. Helen left nursing in 1966 and devoted her time to homemaking when living in Montreal and Calgary. She returned to the medical field from 1980 to 1985 as an office nurse and worked for several doctors in Vancouver. Some of her interests included finishing antique furniture, walking, reading, sewing, spending time with family, playing golf, and travel.

 

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church (640 – 19th Avenue NW, Calgary, AB) on Monday, May 27, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. Reception to follow at 621 – 19th Avenue NW, Calgary, AB.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Bayshore (AHS) and Comfort Keepers for all the loving care that was given to Helen. It was greatly appreciated.
