Obituary of George Richard Law

January 23, 1933 - Ayr, Scotland

Our beloved grandfather, father, brother, and friend, George Richard Law of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at the age of 91 years, with his loving son by his side.

George was born in Ayr, Scotland, on January 23, 1933, and had many fond memories of his early life in Troon, Scotland, despite living through the Depression and WWII. As many can attest, he was very proud of being Scottish and liked to jokingly share that the Scots invented pretty much everything.

In 1951 at the age of 18, George immigrated to Canada. He was a championship rower with the Argonaut Rowing Club in Toronto starting in 1953. He loved being a manager and a draftsman and was proud of his long career with Shell, where he had many friends, first in Toronto, and then in Calgary, where he moved with his family in 1984.

George married Hendrika “Hetty” on May 21, 1960, and they shared many happy years until her sudden passing in 2005. They both loved to dance, garden, play cards, and swim at their cottage in Sharbot Lake, ON. When they retired, Bentley (their dog), became a major part of their lives together. In addition to being a very proud grandfather, he also enjoyed photography, reading, listening to music, and loved woodworking which he was especially skilled at. He had a strong faith in God and loved serving his community at Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church, where he was an active member for over 30 years.

George will be most remembered by his son John Law, his daughter-in-law Susanna Law, and his grandchildren, Sandon Law and Aleska Law of Calgary, AB; his daughter Georgina Law and his son-in-law Kevin Bukvi of Victoria, BC; as well as by his younger brother John McGeorge Law, and numerous nieces and nephews in Canada and the US. He was predeceased by his wife Hetty, and his sisters, Ellen and Annie.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McInnis & Holloway (Crowfoot, 82 Crowfoot Circle NW, Calgary, AB) on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Funeral Services will be held at Varsity Acres Presbyterian Church (4612 Varsity Drive N.W., Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. Reception to follow in the Church Hall.
