February 5, 1932 – Siksika, Alberta
May 3, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with heartfelt loss that we announce the passing of John (Napiinaama’ahka) Red Gun of Siksika Nation, AB, on Friday, May 3, 2024, at the age of 92 years.
John was born on February 5, 1932, in Siksika, AB, Harry and Rosaria Red Gun. He was one of twelve children, with late sisters, Elizabeth and Phyliss; and late brothers, Christie, Alex, Harry, and Francis. Sadly, he will be leaving behind his beloved sisters, Rachel, Patsy, Lily, and Bernadette.
John was married to his late wife Hilda (Natohkotsikamosaki) “Low Horn” Red Gun at Alex Red Gun's residence by a Catholic priest and by an elder of the Siksika Nation. Together they had ten children: Johnathon (Claudia), Roxanna (Stan), Marvine (Larry), Albertine (Sidney), Rebecca, Sandy (Hubert), Keith (Melanee), and Fay.
He also has his adopted children, Daryl (Mona) Macdonald, Darlene (Adrian Provost) Davis, Horton Old's, Rufino “Dimples” Vallesteros II, Larry Thomas, Roy Fairbrother, David Everett; and his special daughter-in-law Melanee Conley. His special grandsons are Chuck Holloway, Tyrone “Hutch” Sitting Eagle, Carter Red Gun, Kobe Holloway, Makel Holloway, Sunshine Yellow Knee, and Ashley Spotted Eagle, and special granddaughters, Tammy Holloway, Pammy Sitting Eagle, Sandralee Red Gun, and Charity Red Gun.
John has numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and foster children. John also has relatives from the families of the Many Guns, Bull Bear, Cutter, Fox, Big Tobacco, Scalplock, Leather, Big Throat, Twigg, Tail Feather, and BeeBe.
John loved to travel to powwows, sightseeing, playing bingo, going to the casino, eating out, and attending horse races. John loved helping the Winnipeg Brothers Farming Business. He loved his Siksika ways of knowing. He supported his wife while she was a member of the Bravedogs Society. John was a hard worker and travelled as far as the United States for work.
His departure comes as a great shock and deep loss, and it is gravely felt by the entire family and countless others who loved him deeply in his love for socializing. The family deeply appreciates your support during this difficult time. Please do not shed tears for John; he lived a long, full life and was the oldest Siksika male member at the age of 92 years old. Take comfort knowing he is reunited with his beloved wife Hilda and is travelling the powwow trail.
