Russell Gordon Smith of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 17, 2024, at the age of 83 years.
Born on September 14, 1940, in Barwick, Rainy River District, ON, Russell led a life of service and dedication. As a young man, he joined the Armed Forces where he served in Germany, earning the Special Service Medal (SSM NATO).
Russell's life was marked by hard work and devotion to his family. He spent over forty years in farming and agriculture, instilling the values of perseverance and dedication in all who knew him.
A lover of reading, fishing, and sports – especially football and hockey – Russell's true joy came from the memorable road trips he often recounted. One trip took him to British Columbia where he reunited with his sister Yvonne after many years; a reunion that brought him immense happiness. Another cherished journey was with his son Roy to Hyatt Mansion Lake Camp, where he reconnected with his sister Kim, niece Vicki, and nephew Don. These trips, filled with fishing and family moments, brought endless smiles to Russell's face.
Russell will be most remembered for his no-nonsense manner and caring heart. No matter who, what, when, or why, Russell would be the first person to give you his shirt off his back.
Russell is survived by his daughter Jacqui Fisher (Rafique Magloire) of Calgary, AB; his sons, Roy Smith (Rowena Smith), Chris Smith (divorced from Ramona Smith) of Calgary, AB, and Jamie Fisher (Janelle Osbourne) of Red Deer, AB. He leaves behind ten grandchildren, Connor Smith, Selena Smith, Naomi Smith, Reese Smith, Caleb Magloire, Jeremiah Fisher, Logan Smith, and Isabella Smith, all from Calgary, AB; as well as one great-grandchild, Maire Smith, of Calgary, AB. Russell is also survived by his sisters, Yvonne Hyatt, Donalda Smith, and Kim Smith; and his brother Stewart Smith
Russell was predeceased by his son Gordon Smith.
