Obituary of James Stewart Fisher
November 25, 1934 – Calgary, Alberta
May 22, 2024 – Calgary, Alberta
Stewart Fisher, beloved husband of Jean Fisher (née Wahlroth) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at the age of 89 years.
Born November 25, 1934, Stewart was the son of Dr. Alexander (Scotty) and Agnes Fisher and was raised in Elbow Park. He spent many happy years at the family cabin near Ghost River. Stewart received a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Alberta (1956) and then studied law at the University of Toronto (1961). After graduation, Stewart accepted a position at MacKimmie Matthews Law Firm in Calgary and sat on the Pension Board for Pan Canadian Petroleum for many years. In 1976, Stewart and his family moved to a farm west of Didsbury. Stewart loved the farm, especially working in the hayfield and his cow-calf operation. He continued to practice law in Didsbury for fourteen years before retiring to Priddis Greens.
Stewart enjoyed trail riding, hiking in the mountains, or working on his low left hook on the golf course. He was generous with his time to various charities including serving as President of the Hospital Infantil de las Californias, the National Board of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and canvassing for the United Way and Heart and Stroke Foundation. Stewart also spent several years leading the Senior Men’s Bible Study at First Alliance Church and made an impact on the lives of many.
In addition to Jean, his loving wife of 63 years, Stewart is survived by his brother John (Barbara); sisters, Joan (Bob Crawford (deceased)) and Sheila (Fred Rayer); cousin Lyn (Scott Munro); his son Timothy (Kathy), daughters, Margaret (Barry Chatwin), Patsy and Carol; and grandchildren Paul, Ian, Forrest, Angus, Jake, Thomas, Luke, Heather, and Claire.
Stewart was particularly proud of his family and despite the challenges of the past few years, he remained the kind, gentle and people-focused man he has always been. Stewart will be lovingly remembered for his warmth, generosity, wit, and quick smile.
