Obituary of Marlene Hancock

September 24, 1936 - Carleton Place, Ontario

May 26, 2024 - Red Deer, Alberta

Our mom, grandma, and great-grandma, Marlene Hancock (nee Lamb) of Red Deer, AB, passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at the age of 87 years.

Marlene was born in Carleton Place, ON, on September 24, 1936. When she finished school, she moved to Ottawa where she met Vern. They married in 1955 and would spend the next 63 years together until his passing in 2018.

Being married to a man in the military, she had the opportunity to live in several provinces in Canada, as well as Germany. After returning from Europe, they lived in Portage la Prairie, MB, and even took a pit stop in Summerside, PEI. After Vern’s retirement in the early 1980s, they moved to Alberta. They started in Calgary, moved around a bit, and finally settled in Red Deer, AB. We used to joke that they should keep everything on wheels. It didn’t matter where Marlene was, she made friends easily.

Marlene wasn’t an athlete but loved watching sports on TV. She was a fan of curling, football, and hockey. Also, when it came to TV, she rarely missed a day of the soap opera, “The Young and the Restless”. Besides her love of flower gardening, she was an avid walker and enjoyed spending time with her beloved dogs. First, there was Alfie, and then with many years in between, along came Buddy. Marlene will be remembered for her great sense of humour and how much she loved a good joke.

Marlene is survived by her daughter Karen (Carey) of Lorette, MB, sons, Ken (Cindy) of Winnipeg, MB, and Robert (Trish) of Calgary, AB; grandson Jason (Leslie) of Winnipeg, MB, granddaughters, Samantha (Dan) of London, ON, and Amanda (Liam) of Calgary, AB; and great-granddaughters, Isabella and Chloe of Winnipeg, MB. Marlene is also survived by her brothers, Wiltse (Mary) Lamb of Smith Falls, ON, and Follick (Greta) Lamb of Georgetown, ON; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Marlene was predeceased by her husband Vern, sisters, Joyce, Ruth, and Shirley; and her parents, Warner and Margaret Lamb.
