Condolences
I am very saddened to learn of the loss of Nico.
He and Tineke have been customers of our restaurant in Mexico for years and I have always loved their kindness and sympathy. I will miss too much the friendly smile and the 'Good Morning Enrico' I received every Tuesday morning at the market from Nico.
My wife Emanuela joins me in my sorrow and we both extend our most sincere condolences to Tineke and Nico's family.
Ciao Nico.
Enrico and Emanuela
y saddened to read that Nico had passed. He was a mentor - and for some time, my boss - at Wi-LAN, and he was respected and liked as a prominent and important member of the team. Carlene and I spent part of a vacation in Puerto Vallarta with Tineke and Nico, and we had a splendid time visiting them in their beautiful apartment and dining out in PV at a Brazilian churrasco they recommended. Our deepest sympathies to Tineke and his family.
I first met Nico in July 2000, just a few months after I arrived in Calgary as a new immigrant. At the time, I was searching for a job, and Wi-LAN was at the top of my list. Nico, who was then the VP of Global Sales, took a chance on me and gave me the break I needed.
Nico wasn't just an exceptional manager; he was a genuine, caring individual who took a deep interest in my well-being. He ensured that I not only adjusted to my new role but also settled into life in Calgary. Nico had a way of blending work with play, and we shared some unforgettable moments, playing golf together in Singapore, India, and, of course, Calgary.
Though Nico retired in 2004, he stayed in touch. All these 20 years! He consistently reached out every year, whether for a round of golf in Spring, a Flames game in Fall, or simply a beer. We made it a point to meet two or three times a year, and those meetings were always filled with lively conversations about our families, my work, politics, and everything under the sun.
Nico's boundless positivity and energy were infectious, and I always left our time together feeling uplifted.
He was not just my manager, but a friend and a true well wisher, and will be deeply missed.
Please accept my and my family's condolences!
Tineke and family. May your beautiful memories sustain you as go through this next part of your journey without Nico. We are so blessed to have known him. John and Brenda Power
Dear Tineke,
My heart goes out to you, my friend. The loss of Nico was so sudden and so devastating. I am deeply saddened.
You two have been wonderful friends over the years. And Nico was such a big part of all that happened at the condos. It’s just unbelievable that he is gone.
Please know that I’m so very sorry for your loss. I am thinking of you and your family, praying for peace and comfort.

Nico was a wonderful neighbour and friend. He had that low key and dry sense of humour that we so appreciated. We enjoyed playing pickleball with him, a gentleman off and on the court. I enjoyed many rounds of golf with Nico and rode in the cart with him sharing many good stories and perpectives about affairs in our neighborhood. He never had an unkind word to say about anybody and I always valued his insight into people. We will miss him always.

T …., Cindy Neal is attempting to send you words of comfort! Grief sucks … sorry isn’t sufficient . You know you are in my thoughts. I still cannot believe Nico’s passing … when I received one of those dreaded emails and it was Nico! Mr Healthy. Dennis and I played volleyball with and against Nico for years. Pease keep in touch my friend dneal59@hotmail.com God loves you
Blair and I are shocked and saddened to hear about Nico‘s passing. In Mexico he was a force to be reckoned with on the volleyball court and it seemed newcomers had to audition to join. He quickly embraced them, however, and was never shy to give a few tips. Nico was a huge part of our Mexican family and he will be greatly missed. He was kind, thoughtful, talented and always had a story to share with a twinkle in his eye. I still remember my mother‘s last few years when she spent time in our community and got to know Tineke and Nico. She always enjoyed their company. Tineke, may you find comfort around all your family and friends and know that we are thinking of the entire family during this difficult time. Veel liefs, Emily and Blair.
My heart is sad with the passing of Nico. He was always held in the highest of regard and respect. We will miss him in Mexico. Our heart goes out to his family and friends. Love always, John & Brenda Power
Dear Family,
Words are not adequate at this time to express all the heart is feeling.
My late husband Stan and Nico were kings of the Volleyball court in Mexico. A friendship that began over a game and became a deep and lasting relationship.
The world I live in is emptier now with his departure and time has not passed enough for most of us to even accept that he is no longer with us.
I always thought Nico was quiet but he had a way of very strongly putting his foot down on the volleyball court that left no room for discussion. All done with a soft voice and a little smile .
There are too many memories to write about here, but one memory will never be forgotten .. how he loved his family, especially his wife, my good friend Tineke, his son Patrick and his lovely granddaughters.
That is the memory to hold tight to. May God comfort you all.
Carmen
Dear Roelefsen Family,
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Nico's sudden passing. He was a true gentleman, with a happy sense of being, and a real snazzy pianist. May God give your family peace and comfort at this time. May you be uplifted in prayer.
Nico, thank you for all the fun memories of playing with you and "Timeless Jazz" . I can't believe you're gone. It's just not fair.
I am sad that Nico is no longer with us. He was a great friend. I knew Nico as a joyful bandleader and pianist. I will miss his infectious laugh and equanimity. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
My heart goes out to all of you at such a sad time. I always enjoyed seeing Nico in PV and know he will be missed.
Barbara Behrendt
I met Nico when he and friends founded the Dutch Business club in 1992.
No idea he was an excellent piano player.
Nico was the first President and I was the second.
Later we played together and Nico founded Timeless Jazz and became our bandleader
Another success because for Nico (boundless optimism) nothing was impossible
We cannot believe he left us and we all miss Nico.
Frans

I first met Nico by joining his band, Timeless Jazz Band (TJB). We always had fun playing together and the many audiences we performed for always had a good time. Nico’s big smile and ready cheerful manner was infectious. In Puerto Vallarta we had an opportunity to listen to a Jazz concert at a beach front restaurant as part of the local jazz festival and it was so much fun to share our love of jazz, some good food and great conversation. I’ll miss Nico a lot.
We are so very saddened and sorry to hear of Nico’s sudden passing. Nico was such a kind and gentle man and an amazing musician. Heartfelt sympathy to Tineke, Patrick and Brynn. He will be sorely missed by all those who were privileged to know him.
